Adversary in the House

BRILLIANTThough the first few chapters took some time..the rest of the book was really AMAZING. I have read a lot of books by the same author but have found this one to be one of his best. While reading the book, i did wish that Mr Debbs would distance himself from Socialism - which he finally came to believe in- but then towards the end, it was clear that it was a different kind of socialism that he was interested in. Also, i wish he had married Gloria instead of Kate; that way, both Kate and Eugene would have had happier private lives. It was also heartening to see Gloria stand up for Eugene through his ordeals- when his wife refused to oblige. All this makes for an interesting read, especially since history is fused so well with his private life. I would strongly recommend this book to those interested in reading real good stuff; the other attraction being its reality.

African Rock Art: Paintings and Engravings on Stone
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (May, 2001)
Average review score:

With 200 examples of David Coulson's color photographyAlec Campbell's African Rock Art: Paintings And Engravings On Stone, superbly and profusely illustrated with more than two hundred examples of David Coulson's color photography, spectacularly and informatively showcases Africa's rock art with examples drawn from the entire continent. The text provides the reader with an authoritative and "reader friendly" historical and interpretative analysis. Alec Campbell draws upon his many years of experience as the founder and former director of the "National Museum of Botswana", and is a resident of the area. David Coulson is founder and chairman of the "Trust for African Rock Art" and combines his special expertise with skills as a photography to provide a visual record of outstanding works, many of which are now endangered by erosion, theft, and vandalism. African Rock Art is an impressive and much appreciated addition to personal, academic and community library African art history and cultural studies collections.

Alberta History Along the Highway: A Traveler's Guide to the Fascinating Facts, Intriguing Incidents & Lively Legends in Alberta's Remarkable Past
Published in Paperback by Red Deer College Pr (July, 1996)
Average review score:

Things I Never Knew as an AlbertanThis is a great little travel book; I keep it in my glove compartment now. It's the kind of information that appears on those "historical marker" and "points of interest" signs you fly by as you're travelling and then wonder about for the next 5 miles. The information is presented as though you're driving along one of the main highways, but you don't have to be going anywhere to enjoy this book. There's lot of information in it about Alberta that I didn't have a clue about even though I've lived here over 20 years. (For example, did you know that Alberta was called Alberta because Louisiana and Carolina were already taken?) Nice, easily digested short blurbs. Definitely worth it if you're interested in the history of Alberta. The best of its kind on Alberta that I've come across.

Aliens for Dinner (Stepping Stone Books)
Published in Library Binding by Random House (Merchandising) (October, 1994)
Average review score:

Aliens for DinnerThis was a really neat book. Aric (the alien) was really funny in this book. The main character Richard worked really hard to get rid of the aliens that were taking over his planet. The aliens were Dwilibs. They were stinky. They smelled like rotten fish. We liked the 10th anniversary covers of this book. It was just as good as Aliens for Lunch and Aliens for Breakfast.

The characters were interesting because each of them are so different than the other. Meg Calvin, and Charles Wallace go on a journey through space to the planet Camotz were Meg's father is trapped. I would recommend this book for 3rd grade and up.

America's Stonehenge: The Mystery Hill Story
Published in Paperback by Branden Publishing Co (February, 2003)
Average review score:

Finally a new look at an old siteThis is not light reading. This is a historical overview of the physiology, use and research at a site with evidence of inhabitation in 2000 BC. The authors go out of their way to avoid committing to *who* was building an astronomical calendar out of stone in southern NH 4000 years ago. Instead, they concentrate on weaving different threads together to show where current research is and why they pursue that direction.
If you've been there. this is a good follow-up to what you've seen. It is also excellent background material prior to a visit. If you have any books by Salvatore Trento, Barry Fell or David Hatcher Childress, this is probably one for your library.
